6 Female Digital Nomad Share their Online Jobs

We put together a series of mini interviews to show you that there are many different ways to become a digital nomad, and that anything is possible if you want to live free and location independent.

I'm a copywriter. I'm the author of Outglobing. I mainly focus on blog posts, articles, and content for businesses. However, writing is my passion, so I also guest post on other personal blogs as well as my own! In addition to writing for others, I've also created a project of my own. That is creating personalized travel itineraries for any budget.

How and when did you get started and what would you recommend to others?

I started being location independent back in August of 2017. I landed my first project on Freelancer and at the time, I actually wasn't too sure what I wanted to do. I liked writing, but I didn't know how much. It wasn't until others gave me feedback on how great I wrote content that I felt confident in my copywriting skills. I actually landed a project with a client my second week of searching and we still work together today! So, my advice to you: don't underestimate your skills! You can achieve great things if you simply just try.

What's your favorite Digital Nomad location?

So far, my favorite location has been Chiang Mai. It's a popular spot for digital nomads and for good reason. There's a sense of feeling belonged there and you can't beat the cost to live there. A normal meal would typically be around $1.50 — unbelievable! The internet speed is great, the weather is wonderful, and the people are welcoming. I've been to quite a few destinations now and I have to say, people sometimes are just out for your money. I didn't get that at all in Chiang Mai!

What's your favorite digital nomad app or resource?

VentureCost, without a doubt! It's been my best friend for traveling around. Actually, I use it every day. I use it to track my expenses while traveling and even see how much it costs to live in other locations around the world. It's nice because it's full of daily expenses from real people and not some outdated report found online.

What's your ultimate item you always bring while traveling?

This is an odd one, but a huge bluetooth speaker! It's awesome because back home I would bring it everywhere, to parties, picnics, even just driving in my car. The quality of the sound is incredible and it gets so loud. It's actually better than most tv sound bars I've been around. I just need music playing all the time, so I have no shame in the fact it takes up half the space in my 1 suitcase that I travel with everywhere.

What is your location independent job?

I work doing digital marketing and advertising on the freelance basis, and my husband Nick does web development & is a crypto guru. We both are working on our own website: advanture42.

How and when did you get started and what would you recommend to others?

I had a remote marketing gig by chance in 2012 and really enjoyed the freedom it presented me and the ability of traveling got me completely hooked on the concept and I've been doing it ever since. As far as recommendations I would say find out if any of your skills are things that can be done remotely and if you don't have any, take up coding, programming is a highly profitable skillset and there never seems to be a shortage of jobs on the market

What's your favorite Digital Nomad location?

I prefer to live my life on the road — we did a tour of Australia for a year in a Ford Econovan, and we're currently touring Europe in our self converted Mercedes sprinter van. So I can't say I have one specific favorite place yet.

What's your favorite digital nomad app or resource?

Funnily enough, I don't think I have any real digital nomad app or resources that I use, there are some great groups on FB for digital nomads I always find interesting.

What's your ultimate item you always bring while traveling?

Data simcard! Its Paramount for my work! That and the ability to charge my laptop or phone. So batteries and adapters for chargers! Can't live life without that!!

Jeanne — Social Media Manager

What is your location independent job?

I'm working as a social media manager / dropshipping amateur / travel agent.

How and when did you get started and what would you recommend to others?

During a 6 months solo trip — mostly in Asia and North America, I met many amazing digital nomads, sharing their own experiences and life stories. I was amazed by their idea to be "free" of the 9–5pm working days and decided that it would be great if I could do the same. I got lucky to find a few international clients who would accept the concept. If you ask me, I would always recommend others to work on their network and talk to people as much as they can. The more you meet others, the more you will not only expand your network but also get new creative business ideas and get to know new cultures.

What's your favorite Digital Nomad location?

So far, Bali! I've traveled to over 50 countries and Bali just seems the right place to me. It has the right climate and warm weather, the beautiful beaches and rice fields, etc. Most importantly though, Bali is the place where I managed to get the most amazing balance between work and private life.

A sim card in each country! Otherwise, Wipolo to keep all my flight tickets and hotel bookings in one app, Trailwallet to track my expenses overseas et I used to go through various Facebook groups to find new job offers and travel related questions.

What's your ultimate item you always bring while traveling?

My MacBook and iPhone for sure… I always a pair of trainers with me, my eBook reader and my noise canceling Bose headphones.

What is your location independent job?

How and when did you get started and what would you recommend to others?

I started exactly 3 years ago. My advice: whilst it's always good to have a basic plan and money put aside before taking the plunge, don't overthink it or listen too much to people around you. Just do it and see where it leads you.

What's your favorite Digital Nomad location?

So far, Bali :)

I would say Maps.me to find my way in unknown cities. Lately, I have downloaded the Moving Nomads app but I haven't used it a lot, planning to use it in the US and back in Asia.

What's your ultimate item you always bring while traveling ?

I always travel with my computer stand, wireless keyboard and mouse to have a comfy and ergonomic desk everywhere I travel.

Keri — Talent Advisor & Consultant

What is your location independent job?

I'm a Talent Advisor and Consultant, which means I have to be available during US business hours.

How and when did you get started and what would you recommend to others?

I have a remote permanent position with a large software company, that I've been with for over 5 years. I've recently begun consulting to build my own business on the side, so that I can eventually just work for myself — including working on my passion for photography.

What's your favorite Digital Nomad location?

Bali, Indonesia so far…the cost vs quality of life makes it hard to beat. Second place would be Croatia, due to affordability, and beauty.

What's your favorite digital nomad app or resource?

Airbnb, since that's mostly where I stay.

What's your ultimate item you always bring while traveling ?

I'd be torn between ziploc bags that I reuse to keep all my liquids in when flying, and my Osprey bag. They're expensive but they're worth the price…they hold a lot!

Jayne — Writer & Business Coach

What is your location independent job?

I am currently in the throes of writing a book and setting up an online business for women transitioning through to middle-age.

How and when did you get started and what would you recommend to others?

I have always been a keen traveller and decided at the end of last year that I could no longer bear to be tied to a desk. I literally bought a one way ticket to Lanzarote as I knew the island and took it from there. It's not been without challenges. Finding accommodation was a nightmare as most landlords are doing airbnb. I hastily took an apartment in a tourist destination but should have waited it out. It's far too noisy and full of drunk tourists! But hey, you live and learn and at least I have a roof over my head. Some British bar workers here are sleeping in their cars as there is hardly any available apartments up for long term rent.

What's your favorite Digital Nomad location?

I will tell you that once I've travelled more. I plan to go to the smaller Canary islands soon and then South America next year.

What's your favorite digital nomad app or resource?

It's got to be my iPhone

What's your ultimate item you always bring while traveling?

My iPhone — it's a portable Mac and I won't be without it — that and my passport, and bank cards. There are the most important things.
